The Coffin Dancer

Curling up with a nice novel is one of the greatest pleasures in life and I am a big fan of the unputdownable category of thriller novels. Lincoln Rhyme is the hero in many of Deaver’s novels. He is the same guy who was also there in “The Bone Collector” which was made into a very successful movie starring Denzel Washington and Angelina Jolie. Rhyme is a quadriplegic which means that he does not have the use of any of his limbs and is bed ridden. Why would a thriller writer make his lead protagonist so crippled physically? Because he wants to show us what a brilliant mind the hero has and can solve complex cases using only forensics and his intelligence. One would expect such a thriller to be either too comples and boring in parts but I assure you this book is neither. It is one of the most fast paced thrillers I have read and the twists and the turns are never ending. You will also learn  a lot of new things in Forensics and you will be surprised how much information can be gleaned using them.
You can read detailed reviews here.
Don’t miss it.

I love reading books and often have been wondering if there was some Indian equivalent of Amazon.com . Turns out there is and it is Flipkart.com but flipkart is only for books, not for anything else. I recently gave it a try and ordered 4 books and I was amazed at their super efficient service. All 4 books had different delivery time and all of them were delivered within the promised period. they kept on delivering individual books , they didn’t wait until all of them were ready  so I got the first book within 4-5 days or ordering and they don’t charge extra for delivery.

As far as the range of books they have is concerned, I think they have a pretty good collection but then I have not needed any rare books so the range has not been tested a lot. They are based in Bangalore and they used Blue Dart for delivery  of my books. The price of the books also seemed reasonable.

I recently came across this article online about web designing. It is easily the most useful article on the subject I have read in a long time. 35 top Web Designers were asked a set of 5 common questions. It is amazing how many of them think alike on so many different topics.

The article mentions a book called “Don’t make me think” by Steve Krug. I gave the book a try and I was surprised to see how so many website make the same basic mistakes and how easily those mistakes can be corrected. An absolute must read for designers.

The Shadow Lines

Amitav Ghosh has been much in the news these days for his new novel “Sea of Poppies” and while I haven’t read that yet, I think one of his best works is “The Shadow Lines” . His writing style is quite like Somerset Maugham and The Shadow Line is a novel that will make you look inwards and backwards into your past at every step of the way.Great if a bit slow read. You can read an  in depth  review here.
