The beautiful poem below is by the great poet Shri Harivansh Rai Bachchan. In the video below the text of the poem it is being narrrated in the movie “Maine Gandhi Ko Nahi Mara” .

The Video of the poem from “Maine Gandhi ko Kahi Mara”
Tune jo na kahaa mai woh sunta raha…
This song is from the movie New York.
New York is one of the best made hindi movies I have seen in a long time. I often used to think that Hindi movies can never match the production values and slickness of Hollywood movies but after seeing this movies I think we are getting there. You can agree or not with the message conveyed in the movie but you cannot dispute that it is an extremely well made.
I also thought that the director did not take sides and neither did he appeared to be “preaching” to the audience. He gave both sides of the story very even handedly .
I think the 3 lead actors have given this their best shot and it shows.
The performance of John Abraham is his best so far , often his good looks overshadow his performance but with this movie he has proved he is ready to lift with the big boys.
Neil Nitin Mukesh is also nearly there, he is also taking big strides in the acting arena and he does a terrific job here.
Katrina Kaif was always stunningly beautiful but here it is her emotive skills which are so and she is clearly in her element in this movie.
Go see this movie if you haven’t already, don’t wait for the DVD for this one. If for nothing else then for the song below which is one of the best hindi ballads I have heard in a long time.
This song is one of the most romantic songs ever, sung beautifully by Jagjit Singh. If i had to make a list of top 3 romantic songs of all time, this one would certainly be there.
Jagjit Singh is the person responsible for taking the Ghazal movement to the masses from the classes. His ghazals are written in a language that is easy to understand and accessible to everyone. You can read more about him here.
I could easily name at least 10 of his works which I think are out of this world and which cast a spell on me but If I had to choose only one, then it would have to be his duet with Chitra Singh ”Us mod se shuru kare” from the album “The Latest”. Listen to it below and you decide if I am right.
I think the greatness of any song must be measured by how well it holds up to time or how “Evergreen” it is. Does it sound as good 15 years later as it does when released ?
One of the most sensuous, haunting, evergreen, melodious hindi songs ever has to be “Mann Kyu Behka” from the movie “Utsav”.
Lyrics by Vasant Dev
Music by Laxmikant and Pyarelal
Performed by Asha Bhosle and Lata Mangeshkar .
This has to be one of the best songs song by Lata-Asha duo.
The movie, Utsav is based on the play “Mrichchakatika” by Sudraka and it is an very artistic and aesthetic effort by girish Karnad.
Gharonda ( 1977 ) by director Bhim Sen is easily one of the best works of that era. nobody can quite match Amol Palekar when he acts helpless and being down but not out. The ending of the movie is quite ironic and takes us by surprise.
The song “Ek akela is shehar me” ( see below ) is one of Gulzar’s best compositions and the songs has been sung beautifully by Bhupinder.
