The beautiful  poem below is by the great poet Shri Harivansh Rai Bachchan. In the video below the text of the poem it is being narrrated in the movie “Maine Gandhi Ko Nahi Mara” .

This song is one of the most romantic songs ever, sung beautifully by Jagjit Singh. If i had to make a list of top 3 romantic songs of all time, this one would certainly be there.

Raj Singh Chaudhary in a still from Gulaal

This movie must rank as Anurag Kashyap’s best effort. Especially notable is the Break-out performance by the newcomer Raj Singh Chaudhary , who has also co-written the movie. It is easily the best debut  by an actor in a very long time. The film is an original look at politics in Rajasthan and I don’t want to give too much of the movie away so go and watch one of the best movies you will see in 2009.

The Appointment in Samara

By Somerset Maugham

A certain merchant in Baghdad sent his servant to the market to buy some provisions. A little while later, the servant returned looking white in the face. In a trembling voice he said, “Just now in the market place I was jostled by a man in the crowd, and when I turned I saw it was Mr. Death. He looked at me and made a threatening gesture. Please lend me your horse, because I want to go to Samara where Mr. Death will not be able to find me.” The merchant agreed and lent the scared man his horse. The servant mounted the horse and rode away as fast as the animal could gallop. Later that day, the merchant went down to the market place and saw Mr. Death standing in the crowd. He approached him and said, “Why did you make a threatening gesture to my servant when you saw him this morning?” “That was not a threatening gesture,” said Mr. Death. “It was only a start of surprise. I was astonished to see him in Baghdad, because I have an appointment with him tonight in Samara.”

Jagjit Singh is the person responsible for taking the Ghazal movement to the masses from the classes. His ghazals are written in a language that is easy to understand and accessible to everyone. You can read more about him here.

I could easily name at least 10 of his works which I think are out of this world and which cast a spell on me but If I had to choose only one, then it would have to be his duet with Chitra Singh  ”Us mod se shuru kare” from the album “The Latest”. Listen to it below and you decide if I am right.

The Painted Veil

Very Rarely it happens that a movie based on the book is better than the book itself. The Painted Veil is one such rare case where  the movie was better than the book. The cinematography is stunning as you can see from the pictures above and below and the camera captures the beautiful scenery of China very well. The movie, based on the book by the same name by Somerset Maugham  is set in the 1920s in China during a cholera epidemic and it tells the story of the relationship between an  serious English doctor and his seemingly incompatible wife.
Naomi Watts is an actress who always given her 110% to the role and Edward Norton is best when he is given a challenging role such as this. Their acting is of such high calibre in this movie that for most of the time you forget they are acting. The story is heart wrenching and the only other movie which compares in sweep , storytelling , acting and rich imagery is the The English Patient, and that is saying something.
Forget “The Shawshank Redemption”, this is the real redemption. IMDB details here. If I had to list my fav. top 5 films of all times, this would surely be in it near the top.

s208

This is  one of my favourite poems by Harivansh Rai Bachchan. The poem says we should not dwell on things past no matter how beautiful they were. I say there is no harm in nostalgia if it gives some solace…
Below is a very nice video showing Amitabh reciting some lines from Madhushala .You can find the Madhushala collection here .

If you must see only one movie on the subject of Infidelity then let it be Wong Kar Wai’s “In The Mood For Love” . The original chinese title of the movie is “Fa yeung nin wa”. You can see the IMDB details here  and read what Roger Ebert has to say about the movie here. The movie has a beautiful and haunting audio theme called “Yumeji’s Theme” which you can watch on youtube here .

In The Mood for Love

While on the subject of movies, I think Patna sorely lacks a good DVD library. The existing ones keep mostly poor pirated prints and I am sure people would be willing to pay 100 bucks or so for original prints of good movies
