The beautiful  poem below is by the great poet Shri Harivansh Rai Bachchan. In the video below the text of the poem it is being narrrated in the movie “Maine Gandhi Ko Nahi Mara” .

Tune jo na kahaa mai woh sunta raha…
This song is from the movie New York.
New York is one of the best made hindi movies I have seen in a long time. I often used to think that Hindi movies can never match the production values and slickness of Hollywood movies but after seeing this movies I think we are getting there. You can agree or not with the message conveyed in the movie but you cannot dispute that it is an extremely well made.
I also thought that the director did not take sides and neither did he appeared to be “preaching” to the audience. He gave both sides of the story very even handedly .
I think the 3 lead actors have given this their best shot and it shows.
The performance of John Abraham is his best so far , often his good looks overshadow his performance but with this movie he has proved he is ready to lift with the big boys.
Neil Nitin Mukesh is also nearly there, he is also taking big strides in the acting arena and he does a terrific job here.
Katrina Kaif was always stunningly beautiful but here it is her emotive skills which are so and she is clearly in her element in this movie.
Go see this movie if you haven’t already, don’t wait for the DVD for this one. If for nothing else then for the song below which is one of the best hindi ballads I have heard in a long time.

Raj Singh Chaudhary in a still from Gulaal

This movie must rank as Anurag Kashyap’s best effort. Especially notable is the Break-out performance by the newcomer Raj Singh Chaudhary , who has also co-written the movie. It is easily the best debut  by an actor in a very long time. The film is an original look at politics in Rajasthan and I don’t want to give too much of the movie away so go and watch one of the best movies you will see in 2009.

If you really want to see a “Hollywood” movie which captures the essence of India then forget everything else and see Slumdog Millionaire. What can I say about a movie which already has won so many awards?

It is based on the novel “Q & A” by Vikram Swarup.

The movie opens with a Jamal Malik( Dev Patel ) on the verge of the Final question on the Indian version of “who wants to be a millionaire” . He is clearly not a well read person and everyone is surprised how he has managed to answer all the questions till now. The movie is about how the fellow came to know the answer to all the previous questions.
Directed by Danny Boyle of “”Sunshine” , “28 Days Later” , “The Beach” and most famously “Trainspotting” which became a cult film, the movie features excellent performances by Dev Patel , Frieda Pinto , Irrfan Khan  , Saurabh Shukla , Anil Kapoor and many others.
Even with the limited release it has had so far, it has climbed to #42 on the all time top movies list of IMDB and I predict that it is destined for a few oscars at the very least, not to mention hundreds of other awards.

It also has a very good soundtrack, see below two of my favourite songs from the movie.

Jai Ho

O Saya

What do you get when you set two veterans like Naseeruddin Shah and Anupam kher against each other and given them and excellent, no-holds-barred script? Pure Gold . The way Naseeruddin Shah portrays his character leaves us in awe of his prowess but then what else do we expect of him?
“A Wednesday”  was released a short while ago but for some reason did not gather the attention it deserves. It is an outstanding movie and while you may not agree with the philosophy of the main protagonist in the movie, you will have to agree that he raises some very valid questions. To say anything more about the  story of the movie would  spoil it for you so all I will say is that watch the movie  on DVD and let me know if you liked it or not. Incidentally the movie has no songs and not for one second does the pace of the movie slacken so you can watch it in one go.
A must watch.
